2.3 Other Possible Deposits of Economic Interest

2.3.1 Uranium

Although the gold mines no longer appear commercially viable, there has been some recurrent interest in at least one other commodity. In the early 1970s, several uranium exploration companies conducted surveys in the Magnolia area (the Kellogg's received several requests for permission to access their land). The uranium mineralization occurs in veins that also contain vanadium, a common association, although the Boulder Creek Granodiorite is anomalously radioactive.

2.3.2 Non-Metallic Resources

Sand and gravel are the two largest non-metallic resources in the Magnolia region, but have remained virtually unexploited. Development of these resources to any significant extent is unlikely due to the distance to market from potential mine sites and the stringent regulatory process in Boulder County.
